Mexican Silver Coins

By Detlef Warner

There is nothing quite like finding the perfect coin like silver dollarsto complete a set, whether you are just starting out with a hobby of coin collecting or you have been doing it for ages. Many people collect past and current coins from all over the world. If you are after a particularly handsome addition to your own personal set you will not do better than becoming the proud owner of a Mexican silver dollar coin, which if in perfect condition will always be a sight to behold. There are several of them about, so have a good look around and see what you can find.

One Mexican silver coin which fits the bill well and is quite easy to locate if you are looking in the right places is the Mexican Silver Libertad. It is a one ounce silver bullion coin first placed in circulation during the late nineteen forties. It was discontinued in some years after but during the late seventies production of the coin started up again. This coin comes in several forms each with different patterns so there is plenty to go at if you decide to start a collection of these. The design on the coin is themed around the famous eight ton gold statue, the Angel of Independence, which towers over Mexico City. It captures the struggle of Mexico's history, thus making it an important coin for anyone to have as part of their coin collection.

There is no other coin to touch or even come close to the elegance and good looks of the Silver Libertad and since 2002 the Bank of Mexico (Banco de Mexico) has created a limited edition of only one thousand one hundred coins which have been kept out of circulation. As this Mexican silver coin was unavailable in the United States of America, it is sure to have become serious collector's items. There were also 2003 Libertads produced in a limited run of 3000 coins, weighing in at a grand total of one kilo.

For anyone coin collector who has an interest in the history and culture of Mexico, the Silver Libertad plays a valuable role in their collection of coins. When you get one you will know you have a Mexican silver coin to be proud.

Paper Money & Coin Collecting News

There are many ways to collect Charlotte gold. Some people have only a mild interest in these coins and may buy just one or two pieces. Other people are more serious and they have a large number of Charlotte issues in their collection. A small number of Charlotte collectors are obsessives who focus exclusively on these pieces and do not collect anything else. I would like to make some suggestions on how to collect Charlotte gold. In my experience, all of these ideas have merit and none is better than the other. It depends on the tastes and budget of an individual collector to determine which one(s) is right for him.

In 1861, on the brink of bankruptcy and pressed to finance the Civil War, U.S. Congress authorized the United States Treasury to issue paper money for the first time in the form of non-interest bearing Treasury Notes called Demand Notes.

Decide what type of paper money collection you want to have. Some people only collect banknotes which contain a certain image (fish, tractors, etc.). Others strive to obtain collections of currency from countries which no longer exist (Biafra, Rhodesia, etc.) Some focus on one single country while others try to collect from every country. It's all up to you and your interests. The variety of banknotes out there is so vast that there is bound to be some category you are interested in.

Metal and water do not go well together! Almost everyone intuitively knows to keep their coins from getting wet but many collectors do not realize that even the moisture present in the air (humidity) can be enough to cause damage. Silica gel absorbs moisture that makes its way inside your safe deposit box, safe or other storage area preventing it from reaching your coins and causing damage. Silica gel can be easily reactivated in the oven when it has absorbed as much moisture as it can hold. Before shopping for silica gel, measure the size of the area to be protected and then buy the appropriate size of silica gel for storage space.

Probably the best way to start collecting paper money is to subscribe to Bank Note Reporter. It's a sort of monthly newspaper for paper money collectors and not only does it carry all the latest news about new issues, currency changes, etc., it also has advertising from a very large number of dealers and it lists paper money shows in the US and around the world. BNR offers free samples to anyone (not just in the USA). Subscriptions run about 30 dollars for 1 year (around 40 dollars outside the US). It's a very good source of information.
