United States: American Eagle gold coin. These coins resist the scratching and damage which can diminish resale value, because it is minted in 91.67 fine gold, which produces harder coins.

If you do decide to clean your old coins they are best cleaned with soap and a soft cloth or you can use Vaseline or olive oil and a Q-tip. These methods can remove dirt and grime while not scratching the surface. Because gold is inert, it does not tone when it comes in contact with oxygen and so a simple surface cleaning will not usually change the coin's appearance. Silver coins, including pre-1965 half dollars, quarters and dimes, will retain the same toning (good or bad), as this kind of cleaning does not remove the surface layer, but it may remove dirt, grime, and some oils from the surface of the coin.

Have you ever held a gold coin in your hand? It's amazing! When you first hold a gold coin, the luster and weight immediately tell you why gold coins have been the standard in storing wealth for all of human history. So what do gold coins have to do with saving money for your mortgage down payment? It's actually very simple: gold attracts wealth. Some people call it attraction, others call it luck. Whichever you prefer, if you own a gold coin you will earn more income. Wealth will be attracted to you and you will save enough money for your down payment sooner than if you did not own the coin. Buy a gold coin and give your luck a boost.

Let's look at the numismatics collector scenario of investing. One of my dreams is buying bullion coins for their raw metal value but then having some of them actually turn out to have numismatic value as well. This means instant gains in my investment over my purchase price. You expose yourself to a greater chance of numismatic value if you diversify your bullion collection. Maybe a few of your bullion coins will end up having some true rare coin appeal.

To date, only four "real" women have been featured on circulating U.S. notes and coins, all others have been fictionalized representations of "Liberty." Susan B. Anthony and Sacagawea have been honored on coins. A portrait of Martha Washington graced the series 1886 and 1891 $1.00 Silver Certificates. The first, First Lady was also featured, along with her husband George, on the series 1896 $1 Silver Certificate. This bill is part of a group of notes that are often referred to as the "Educational Series." These early, large size notes display beautiful engravings and are highly sought after by collectors.

Generally speaking, 19th century gold coins with very low original mintage figures tend to have prooflike surfaces more often than not. As an example, the 1890 quarter eagle pictured above is an issue with a mintage of only 8,720 and it is often found with reflective surfaces. Some of the other types of coins that are sometimes seen with prooflike surfaces include Philadelphia Type Three gold dollars, Philadelphia quarter eagles from the 1870's and 1880's, Three Dollar gold pieces and Liberty Head double eagles from the 1890's.

An old practice to test whether a gold coin was counterfeit was to bite down on it. Since pure gold is relatively soft any base metals mixed with the gold to lessen its value will also harden the coin, and so make it harder to bite on. The majority of bullion counterfeits (of all types) are rare, and fairly easy to detect when comparing their weights, colors and sizes to authentic pieces. This is because the cost of reproducing any given coin precisely can easily exceed the market value of the originals.
