The performance of gold bullion is often compared to stocks. They are fundamentally different asset classes: gold is a store of value whereas stocks are a return on value (i.e. growth plus dividends). Shortly after Columbus discovered the 'New World,' vast amounts of gold were discovered in Mexico. The 1821 on the lower left commemorates the year of Mexico's independence. The date on the right indicates year of mintage. The reverse of the coin depicts the Mexican coat of arms, a Mexican golden eagle devouring a snake while perched atop a cactus.

The design was the Liberty Head bust but this was only made until 1907. The design was then changed to the Indian Head and Saint Gaudens motifs and was used until 1933 when the Great Depression began.
