Additional Numismatists Information

Among my top five worst coin investments are modified coins, such as genuine U.S. Mint products that have been altered by adding holographics or coloring. These coins are generally considered "damaged" by serious coin collectors, and you will only get the bullion value when you go to sell them, if that. I have heard of dealers discounting them because of the added impurities that the paint and other crap applied to the coins adds to the metal.
According to many experts, the best type of investment coins are rarer, key date coins issued by the United States, in the best grade you can afford to buy them in. If you can't afford to shell out $2,000 a coin to buy key dates in high grades, then buy common coins in the finest grades you can. Lower grade, common coins have historically not appreciated as much in value as key date coins do, so they are probably not a good investment choice (although they're great for filling up the holes in albums, especially with kids helping out!)
Buy Krugerrand gold coins.

Today, like all investments and commodities, the price of gold is ultimately driven by supply and demand, including hoarding and disposal. Unlike most other commodities, the hoarding and disposal plays a much bigger role in affecting the price, because most of the gold ever mined still exists and is potentially able to come on to the market for the right price. Given the huge quantity of hoarded gold, compared to the annual production, the price of gold is mainly affected by changes in sentiment, rather than changes in annual production.

U.S. Silver Certificates were legal-tender issue notes authorized by the Acts of February 28, 1878, and August 4, 1886, and have been issued in all denominations up to $5,000. Many of the early "Large Size" issues featured beautiful, ornate engravings. The later "Small Size" notes resemble Federal Reserve Notes but bear blue seals, and feature the wording "Silver Certificate" on the face. Silver certificates were last issued in 1957.

New US Mint Pricing for American Buffalo and Eagle Gold Coins

Mon, 12 Jan 2009 15:15:14 +0000

American Buffalo Gold and American Eagle Gold CoinThe United States Mint on Monday updated pricing across the board for their remaining 2008-dated American Buffalo Gold and American Eagle Gold coins.

The price changes were expected and in line with a January 7 notice where the Mint announced a new pricing policy that would adjust gold and platinum coin prices based primarily on the London Fix weekly average (covering the previous Thursday through Wednesday a.m. Fix).

The policy was introduced to "mitigate the effect that fluctuating gold and platinum commodity costs" has on coins, the Mint said. The new pricing mechanism is much more open as it contains tables of coin prices based on ranges of London Fix bullion prices. If the London Fix weekly average stays within a $50 range for gold and a $100 range for platinum, the collector coin prices would not be change. A penny beyond those thresholds in either direction kicks in a price adjustment.

The Original Commemorative Quarter

Content Partner: Pinnacle-Rarities
We’ve entered the last year of the popular modern commemorative quarter program. For better or worse, all fifty states have created designs and the final mintages will hit the nation’s cash registers during the remainder of the year. While I find these final five designs attractive, they (like their modern predecessors) lack the ...]
